December 2004 Report of Cairo University
AAPG Student Chapter “CUSC”
This report covers our activities from Dec., 2003 to Dec., 2004. Our activities were mainly:
1- Organizing lectures to our colleagues in the faculty, by inviting pioneers from oil/gas companies from different disciplines (geology, geophysics and engineering), to improve the linkage between the academic trend and industrial applications.
2- Organizing one-day geological field trips for the students to different areas around Cairo.
3- Creating a seasonal magazine (Compass), however, publishing now is limited until we construct a web site for more distributions.
In order to keep up success and achieve our targets, a continuous communication and regular meeting has been maintained amongst the members. These meetings regularly took place every Saturday in the geology department, Cairo University. But due to some circumstances concerning exams of the undergraduates and few postgraduates, the meeting appointment has been changed to be the 1st Saturday of each month.
I- Pioneer lectures
For this kind of activity, within the context of our mission (Academia-Industry linking), we proudly hosted three Pioneer lectures in our University, in an attempt to take part in the educational process. We started by inviting Mr. Ahmed Hagras senior geophysicist in bp Egypt, for giving a lecture in Cairo University entitled “Application of Seismic in the 21st Century” on Feb., 7, 2004, which covered a lot of important issues related to the evolution of the seismic acquisition and processing stages that help in enhancing the seismic data quality for better geologic interpretation and the effect of that on the play and prospect definition that lead to increase the oil & gas production all over the world. The Geology department staff, CUSC members and many students attended this talk and they were very happy of it.
On July 24, 2004 Dr. Wafik Meshref, the former deputy EGPC general manager for Exploration & Bid rounds accepted our invitation for a lecture entitled “Mesozoic Delta in Egypt – new play”. Through this valuable lecture, Dr. Meshref presented and discussed the tectonic framework of Egypt in general with specific focusing on the Mesozoic tectonism that was the reason of the generation of major Mesozoic basins in Egypt that considered as oil and gas provinces. It looked like most of the attendee had enjoyed a fruitful discussion about the new Jurassic play of the Western Desert of Egypt.
We finished this kind of activity of this year by a session for Dr. Melissa Johansson – team leader geoscientist in Schlumberger-Egypt. The session held on Dec., 11, 2004 in Cairo University, Geology Department and was entitled “Application of borehole imaging tool in deep-marine clastic sediments”. Many of the Geology department students and staff attended that seminar that discussed the accuracy of FMI logging tool for interpretation and differentiation the turbidities reservoir sand from other sedimentary environments.
II- One-day field trips
Over the last year we organized two field trips; the first one was to “Abu Roash Protected Area and Cairo–Alexandria road geology” on Feb., 13, 2004, this trip was under the sponsorship of Shell Egypt, which provided us with logistic needs and food .The trip was led by Dr. Ahmed Niazy El Barkooky. Mr. Hugh Nicholson – senior geologist, in bp Egypt, jointed the trip in addition to the members of the CUSC. The trip was proposed to show the 1st & 2nd year students different kinds of structures related to the Late Cretaceous fold belt and also the stratigraphic pattern and facies of these Late Cretaceous rocks. The trip involved also an archeological side represented by visiting the incomplete pyramid of the pharaoh Gidif Raa that located in this area. The pyramid is dated to the seventh dynasty.
